That said, I’m going to share four things that I did in this painting that I’m happy with. The biggest reason though, is that I’ve never tried a watercolor with this level of detail and this quantity of fur before! It was a learning process. Why? Well, I have some ideas… and I hope to experiment with a second painting to work through some of the snags. It’s pretty densely black… and missing some details. I openly admit this painting didn’t turn out quite like I envisioned. Since it’s the season for black cats, it just seemed like the week to break out the watercolors and give it a try. I’ve been meaning to experiment with a portrait of him based on this photo for a while. Isn’t this cat cute? He’s one of the cats at the barn where my horse lives, and while we don’t know his parents, we do know he must have quite a bit of Persian ancestry to have all that fur! He grows a little lion’s mane in the winter! As it turns out, all that fur is quite the challenge to paint. Painting a Persian cat in watercolor is harder than I thought! My latest painting is far from perfect… with a subject this cute, it’s just hard to compare, right? That said, here are four tips based on what I got right and my thoughts on a few things I hope to do differently next painting.
